What I Loved in February

A collection of things I loved in February, from beauty products and fashion to entertainment and everything in between.

For Valentine’s Day and our anniversary, Billy and I usually enjoy a cake from Whole Foods or pastries from Bottega Louie. This year was different because in November Billy became a vegan. I wanted to find something sweet that we both could indulge in so I searched for “the best vegan cookies”. One name kept coming up, The Naughty Cookie and it had amazing reviews. There were a few types to choose from: chocolate chip, triple chocolate chunk, peanut butter chocolate chip, s’mores, or the sampler box. I decided on the Ooey Gooey S’mores and they were truly the best cookies I’ve ever tasted; Billy and I devoured the box that day!

I usually shy away from running shoes in light shades since they get dirty so easily, but when I discovered these white Nike Air Max Oketo Sneakers, I couldn’t not purchase them. They’re super comfortable which makes them ideal for long walks, running on the treadmill, and lifting weights—plus they add a touch of “sleekness” to my athleisure wear.

I promised myself in January 2019 that I would read a few books throughout the year, cover-to-cover. I started a couple but then I’d take on a time-consuming product, or I’d lose interest. This past January I made the same commitment to myself—carve away a few hours each week to read something compelling. I watched the Oscar-nominated documentary, Tales of The Grim Sleeper and read countless L.A. Weekly and L.A. Times articles about Lonnie Franklin Jr.: a serial killer who terrorized South Central during the 1980s and 1990s, and then again in the early 2000s. The Grim Sleeper: The Lost Women of South Central is written by an investigative crime reporter, Christine Pelisek who documented these cases for ten years in L.A. Weekly. She later went on to write this book detailing the victim’s lives, police cover-ups, racial injustices, poverty, prostitution, gang warfare, and drug addiction. Even though the subject matter is grim, it’s written in such captivating detail that I find myself looking forward to when I can set aside an hour or so to read.

What I Loved in February 2020: This Acrylic Glitter Rolling Cart

I have a weakness for ghost furniture—my acrylic chairs in my dining room area look so chic that I’m always hunting for similar pieces to add to my apartment. When I came across this Tainoki acrylic rolling cart with silver specks of glitter, I couldn’t resist. After it was delivered it sat in my living room for a few weeks because I wasn’t sure where I was going to place it. I went back and forth between using it as a bar cart or putting it in my bathroom to neatly display my beauty products. Ultimately, I decided on the latter, and it’s one of my best furniture investments. Sadly, after I scoured the internet looking for a store or website that still carries it, I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s no longer available online. I did, however, read that the company Tainoki sells a number of their pieces at Home Goods.

As a music fanatic, I got excited when I heard that a High Fidelity remake was in the works. This time, rather than being a movie, it’s a 10 episode limited series on Hulu. One of the main differences between the two is that Rob is a female, unlike the original. Both characters do have a few things in common, however: they’re romantically challenged, they both own a record store, and they create “top 5 playlists” for every occasion. Inspired by this, I decided to make a playlist of my favorite songs for the month of February.
